of oculomotor and trochlear nerve involvement have also been reported.' With intracranial hypertension, changes in seventh nerve function are exceptional. Peripheral facial nerve palsy was observed in five individuals suffering from benign intracranial hypertension.78 In one additional patient facial myokymia has been observed, thus showing that, with intracranial hypertension, facial nerve involvement can result in axonal hyperactivity. No clear explanation was offered as to the pathophysiology of the facial nerve involvement in intracranial hypertension, although it was felt that this dysfunction represented a non-specific pressure related phenomenon. In our patient, it is conceivable that the displacement of intracranial nervous structures related to the ArnoldChiari type I malformation played a role in the mechanism of this peculiar eyelid phenomenon, by allowing the seventh cranial nerve to be affected by elevation in intracranial pressure.

Retinitis pigmentosa associated with Fuchs' heterochromic uveitis.

OBJECTIVE To investigate whether the combination of Fuchs' heterochromic uveitis (FHU) and retinitis pigmentosa (RP) in the same patient is coincidental or represents a true association. METHODS We have examined the frequency of FHU in 338 patients with RP and in 1984 patients who were seen in our primary care ophthalmic clinic because of reasons other than RP. RESULTS Of 338 patients with ...

The unusual association of inverse retinitis pigmentosa and Fuchs’ heterochromic iridocyclitis

BACKGROUND Classic retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and other syndromic variants have previously been associated to Fuchs' heterochromic iridocyclitis (FHI). Common immunogenic and inflammatory pathways have been proposed to explain the higher incidence of this uveitic phenomenon in patients with retinal dystrophies without definitive answers. Infrequent variants of RP such as inverse RP have not been...

Does autoimmunity to S-antigen play a role in Fuchs' heterochromic cyclitis?

Autoimmunity directed against retinal or choroidal antigens has been suggested to play a role in the chorioretinal lesions observed in patients with Fuchs' heterochromic cyclitis. This hypothesis was addressed and patients with Fuchs' heterochromic cyclitis were tested for cellular immunity (migration inhibitory factor assay) against human retinal S-antigen. A significantly higher percentage of...
